Bathing is a primal urge in human-beings, in all cultures and epochs. Bathing is linked with traditions and rituals, with social and religious practices. In art, it is often associated with biblical and mythological stories, such as Susanna and the Elders, Bathsheba, or Diana and Actaeon. Above all, these works of art reflect the different perceptions of the body, of beauty and vulnerability, and intimacy. This is what inspired fine artists to dedicate themselves to the subject. For the first time, this publication provides a broad historical and thematic overview of the subject: it undertakes excursions to the Orient and Japan, reports on experiences with spa resorts, and describes baths as the scene of murder. Over 150 works of art from the 15th century to the present day, including paintings, sketches, prints, photographs, sculptures and video installations, are brought together in a fascinating dialogue.
