Gibt es ein Leben nach dem Tod? Und wenn ja, was erwartet einen dann im Jenseits? Mit diesen Fragen haben sich in Jahrtausenden schon unzählige Gläubige sämtlicher Konfessionen, Theologen und Philosophen auseinandergesetzt.
Und jetzt tut es auf seiner neuen Single “The Afterlife”, einer Auskopplung aus seinem kommenden Album “So Beautiful Or So What”, auch der jüdisch-stämmige Sänger und Songwriter Paul Simon. Über Simons Einstellung zu Glauben und Religion rätseln seine Fans seit den 1970er Jahren. Thematisiert hat er beides in seinen Liedern oft genug, mal auf spirituelle und nachdenkliche Weise, mal eher spöttisch und ironisch distanziert. Sehr viel schlauer werden Paul-Simon-Fans nach dem Hören von “The Afterlife” auch nicht sein. Aber sicherlich bestens unterhalten. Denn fröhlicher hat wohl kaum jemand seinen eigenen Tod besungen. In der himmlischen Nummer, die er mit einem entspannten Soca-Beat unterlegt hat, sinniert Simon darüber nach, wie wohl “das Leben danach” aussieht. Allzu paradiesisch scheint es nicht zu sein. Denn den Neuankömmling wird zunächst einmal mit Bürokratie und langen Warteschlangen konfrontiert. Da bleibt man doch besser gleich am Leben...
